How to get a reliable identification

Photography guide

  • —Fill the frame with the component and keep the whole body in view.
  • —Photograph every marking, label and stamped code — this is what makes an exact identification possible.
  • —Take a side profile: ports, threads and mounting faces identify the variant.
  • —Include the connector or terminal end.
  • —Avoid direct flash on shiny bodies; angle the light instead.
  • —Add a scale reference such as a rule or a coin if size matters.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the identification?

Accuracy depends on what is visible. When a manufacturer marking or model code is legible, identifications are usually exact. When only the body shape is visible, the result is presented as likely or possible, with the reasoning shown. Every report states what it could not determine rather than guessing.

What does the confidence level mean?

Confidence reflects the strength of the visible evidence, not a probability. High means markings or documentation support the identification directly. Low means the result rests on shape and context alone and must be verified before any decision.

Can I use a report to order a part?

Use it to prepare the order, not to place it blind. Each report lists the specifications that must be confirmed, the questions to ask a supplier, and the checks to complete first. Always confirm against manufacturer documentation.

Why does it ask for more photos?

Because a specific extra view would resolve a specific uncertainty — usually a nameplate, a connector, a thread or a side profile. Adding a photo re-analyses the whole set together rather than replacing the previous result.

What happens to my photos?

Photos are resized in your browser and their location and device metadata are removed before analysis. Reports, notes and projects are stored on your device only. See the privacy page for details.

Can I upload a manual or datasheet?

Yes. Attach up to three PDFs or images per investigation. Anything the analysis draws from your documents is labelled as document-sourced in the report.

Does it work on a phone in the field?

Yes. The camera runs full screen with zoom, works one-handed, and images are compressed before upload so it stays usable on mobile data.

Is it free?

Yes. There is a daily allowance so the service stays available, and creating a free account raises it. No card, no subscription.

Still stuck?

Every report has a feedback control. Telling us what was wrong is the fastest way to improve identifications for components like yours.
